Storey promoted

Zachary Storey was recently promoted to corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Storey is serving with the Marines in Northern Kuwait. He is the son of Lloyd and Wanda Storey of Settlers Road.

Aceto awarded drama honor

Jason Aceto was recently awarded “all drama cast” at the Maine Drama Festival at Windham High School.

Aceto got the award playing the role of Trinculo in a one-act play entitled “The Tempest.” Twelve schools participated in the festival.

He is president of the senior class at Westbrook High School and a member of the drama club.

Chuluda delivered Meals on Wheels

Westbrook Mayor Bruce Chuluda delivered Meals on Wheels on Wednesday as part of a campaign to show support for the community’s seniors.

Peter Nelson, director of Food and Nutritional Services for Southern Maine Agency on Aging, was excited that Chuluda participated in Mayors for Meals Day. “We hope to raise awareness of senior hunger in our community,” Nelson said.

The Southern Maine Agency on Aging Meals on Wheels program is located at the Prides Corner Congregational Church in Westbrook. Helen Trefethen, site coordinator, sends out more than 50 meals daily in Westbrook and Gorham.

Clients receive not only a hot nutritious lunch but also a friendly visit from a caring volunteer. The agency thanked Chuluda for being one who cares about the senior population.

WRVC students win medals

Westbrook Regional Vocational Center took home 12 medals, including one gold, in a recent skills and leadership conference in Bangor.

The gold medalist, K.C. Nunley, will attend the National Skills Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Mo., June 19 through July 24. He was awarded the gold medal in the residential wiring category.

The other medalist were Taylor Bourne, bronze medal in architectural drafting; Adam Roy, bronze medal, computer maintenance technician; Annya Lounsberry, bronze medal, customer service; Jonathan Bouffard, silver medal, first aid and CPR; J.J. Marcigliano, bronze medal, criminal justice; Nathalie Mitchell, Vanessa White, Ericka Leary and Katie Nicolantonio, silver medals, health knowledge bowl; Heather Weeman, silver medal, job skills demo A; Tiffany Sinclair, preschool teacher assisting, silver medal.

Other students who participated in the Bangor conference included Erik Lowell, Nikki Fernald, Alex Roy, Jessy Marr, John Atwood, Hillary Knight, Kyle Nunley, Dana LeBel, Tim Kelley, Jessica Belanger and Megan Crimmin.

The advisors were Darlene Bruns, Doc Hannaford, Jessica Radley and Peter Wilson.

Car converted to truck

Dianne Grandmaison didn’t have a truck to haul off pine needles she had raked in her yard on March 21.

So she improvised.

She opened up the trunk and put the top down on her Chrysler convertible, transforming it into a truck. She trucked 15 garbage bags filled with pine needles to Public Services.

Nesselrode art contest winner

Amy Nesselrode took first place in the annual Westbrook Woman’s Club Art Contest March 7 at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church.

Shawn Cofill placed second, and Amy McIntire placed third. Christopher Reynolds received an honorable mention.

Sixteen students submitted paintings that were judged by the husband-and-wife team of Janet and Andy Curran, Westbrook artists. The art contest was arranged by Carolyn Leavitt, Education Committee chairperson, and members of the committee.

All oft the artists are invited to participate in the District 7 Art Contest from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 26 at the Baxter Memorial Library in Gorham. Winners in that contest will be entered in the GFWC/MFWC State Art Contest in May.

Several students and their parents were present when Art Director Georgina Grenier presented the awards, School Superintendent Stan Sawyer, Assistant Superintendent Jan Breton and art teacher Linda Stanley were special guests.

Refreshments were prepared and served by Marjorie Eames, Lucy Goggin, Anne Kilmartin, Georgia Therio and Jan Usher.

The March 21 meeting began with a chowder contest. Eight members prepared chowders or soups that were the main ingredient for a tasty luncheon that included tossed salad and a variety of cakes for dessert. After enjoying the meal, members voted for the chowder or soup they liked best and ribbons were awarded to Anita Blackstone, first place for a pumpkin soup; Sally Labrecque, second for a haddock and shrimp chowder; Elizabeth Young, third for a broccoli soup; and Nancy Curran, honorable mention for a haddock chowder. Ruth Joy, Germaine Grant, Beverly Libby and Evelyn Meserve also made soups or chowders.

While members lingered over coffee, Carol Quint presented a program to celebrate International Women’s Day. She shared information about the charity projects in the slums of Porto Alegre, Brazil, that are supported by a General Federation Women’s Club with which she has been corresponding for two years.

Folloiwing the regular business meeting, the members welcomed Ruth Shadbolt, who brought along a large display of the miniature rooms, furniture and other items she has been creating for more than 25 years. She told the story of how she became involved in the hobby and explained how she makes some of the items.

The afternoon closed with an animated talk by Deanna Boisvert, a freshman at Westbrook High School. The Westbrook Woman’s Club had made a contribution that helped Deanna attend a weekend leadership conference in Boston.

She enthusiastically told the members about her experiences at the conference and shared some of what she had learned.

Trask on USM dean’s list

Elizabeth M. Trask has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at the University of Southern Maine.

Trask, a sophomore majoring in political science, is a member of the Women’s Huskies Cross-Country and track teams. The Women’s Indoor Track team won the state championship and the Little East Conference meet this winter.

She placed fourth in the 3000m run at the conference meet at USM. Trask is a 2004 graduate of Westbrook High School.

Dahms excels at Wheaton

Christopher Dahms has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass.

Dahms is a graduate of Westbrook High School. Dahms’ parents are Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence P. Dahms.

Banquet for charity

Central Africa Vision is sponsoring a free banquet on Thursday, April 6, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Italian Heritage Center, 40 Westland Ave., Portland.

The banquet will feature Jean Paul Samputu, performing authentic African singing and dancing. An early silent auction preview will be at 5:30 p.m. The evening will benefit those affected by genocide in Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
