School bus drivers from Westbrook and Gorham school departments joined to receive training from the Homeland Security School Bus Watch Program.

On March 24, drivers from both school departments met at the Westbrook High School to train on recognizing potential security risks. The program was originally set up to train truck drivers as they travel millions of miles over the nation’s highways.

The school bus travels over the same highways but also through local neighborhoods each day where the driver is able to recognize if something just doesn’t look right, maybe it’s a car or truck parked where it shouldn’t be or someone taking pictures of the bus or students waiting for the bus, said Westbrook Transportation Director Penny Esposito.

The driver then knows the proper procedure to report their observations to the Homeland Security and to local authorities, said Gorham Transportation Director Laurie Anderson.
