“Seeing/Being Awake: Zen and the Photography of Thomas Merton,” a lecture and photo slideshow will be presented by Sr. Marilyn Sunderman, RSM, Ph.D., associate professor of theology at Saint Joseph’s College, on Wednesday, April 5, in Room 128 of the Harold Alfond Hall from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Sunderman will talk about Merton’s photography as a reflection of his commitment to integrating the Zen approach to reality and to his life experiences, especially as a creative photographer. The lecture/photo slideshow will include a discussion of Zen principles and the role of Zen in the development of Merton’s spiritual journey. She will show and discuss some of Merton’s black-and-white nature photographs and Buddha photographs through the lens of the Zen principle of seeing/being awake to reality.
