Republican Tatia Munday plans to challenge incumbent Democrat Tim Driscoll for his seat in the Maine House of Representatives.

Republican Lyle Cramer is planning to run against Democrat Ann Peoples for the seat now occupied by Rep. Bob Duplessie, who has reached his term limit.

The Westbrook Democratic City Committee and the Republican City Committee held caucuses over the last two weekends to select delegates for state conventions.

Both parties also heard from candidates running for state and national offices at their respective caucuses.

On Feb. 26, the Democratic City Committee held its caucus. Rick Goss, chairman of the committee, said the committee is sending 45 delegates to the state convention this year. He said the number of candidates is tied to the number of Democratic votes in the city during the last presidential election in 2004.

Goss said members heard from state Sen. Ethan Strimling, who spoke on behalf of Gov. John Baldacci. In addition, Goss said a representative from Rep. Tom Allen’s office spoke to the caucus. Goss said Allen had planned to attend the caucus, but he was at a funeral in Bangor at the time of the caucus.

Goss said about 28 Democrats have been named to fill the available slots for the state convention this spring. Anyone interested in attending the convention should call Goss at 854-2050.

The Westbrook Republican City Committee held its caucus on March 5. Darryl Wright, a member of the committee who will be serving as a delegate to the state convention, said members of the committee also heard from Republican candidates for national and state office.

“They were giving their ideas of what they wanted to accomplish,” Wright said.

Wright said David Emery, a Rockland native who is running for governor against Baldacci, addressed the caucus. Emery was a member of the Maine House of Representatives from 1971 to 1975 and then served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1975 to 1983.

State Rep. Darlene Curley of Scarborough, who is running against Allen also addressed the caucus, said Wright. Sen. Olympia also sent a representative to speak at the caucus, Wright added.

Like the Democrats, Wright said the Westbrook Republicans still have slots available for anyone wishing to attend the state Republican convention this spring. Wright said anyone interested should call caucus chair Lyle Cramer at 854-5115.
