Windham’s boys were in the lead after last Tuesday’s giant slalom race at Mt. Abram, but three of six skiers fell the following day and the Eagles had to settle for sixth place in the field of 12 at the Class A state skiing championships.
Still, the program, which was started just a few years ago, is improving, and that is encouraging to the athletes.
“Our team did a lot better this year than last year or the year before,” said junior Nathaniel Butler, who took fifth in the GS and seventh in the slalom.
I had a few good finishes this year, but it wasn’t my best,” said Butler. “I didn’t finish as many races as I did last year.”
Teammate Justin Legassey, a freshman, was 14th in the GS and 10th in the slalom.
Casey Kenahan was the top finisher for the Lady Eagles, coming in ninth in the GS and seventh in the slalom.
Lake Region’s Taylor Powell topped the field in the boys slalom, but he didn’t finish his second run one day earlier in the GS. Robert Martin was 17th in the GS and 14th in the slalom for the Lakers.
Amy Tragert was tops among the Lady Lakers, finishing 10th in the GS and second in the slalom. The girls team was fourth among the field of 10.
