The original Mechanic Street Fire Station was built in 1890 to house the Valentine Hose Company, which was the first organized fire company in Westbrook.
The Valentine Hose Company was named after Leander Valentine, who was the first mayor of Westbrook, and was serving as mayor when this station was built.
Valentine Hose Company (Westbrook Engine #2) operated out of this building into the 1970s. Urban Renewal took this building as part of the project and demolished it and the house to the left of it.
The present Mechanic Street fire station is built on the site of the old station.
