Five generations for Mains family

Florence and Ernest Mains Jr. of Cumberland Street said their great-great granddaughter, Rainah, will be a year old on April 5.

Rainah represented the fifth generation in a recent family photo that included Florence Mains, her son, Robert Mains Sr.; Robert Mains, Jr.; a great-granddaughter, Jamie, holding Rainah.

St. Pierre, Rice engagement

Philip and Lucille St. Pierre of Westbrook along with Alfredo and Ruth Caraballo of Biddeford proudly announce the engagement of their children, Susan J. St. Pierre of Westbrook and Ryan S. Rice of Saco.

The wedding and a reception is planned for September.

Duncanson excels in marine biology

Arthur Duncanson was named to the dean’s list for the first semester at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine.

Duncanson, a member of the class of 2009, graduated from Westbrook High School. He is majoring in marine biology.

Knight on Colby dean’s list

Benjamin P. Knight, a freshman at Colby College in Waterville, has been named to the dean’s list for outstanding academic achievement during the fall semester.

Knight, who attended Westbrook High School, is the son of Margaret Knight of Westbrook and Jonathan Knight of Worcester, Mass.

90th birthday honors

Frances Libby, a long time Westbrook resident of Reed Street, was honored on her 90th birthday on Feb. 11 at a party hosted by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Alan White of Saco.

Guests included sons Stuart Libby and his wife, Judy, of Bismarck, N.D. and Paul Libby of Westbrook. Daughter-in-law Gloria and her husband, Dan Twomey, of South Portland also attended.

Grandchildren at the celebration were Scott Libby and his wife, Janice; Kimberly Fletcher and her husband, Rob; Alan White Jr. and his wife, Donna; Jennifer Barnes and her husband, Robert; Dianne Wheeler and her husband, Matt; Robin Mercier and her husband, Don; and Jerry Libby and his wife, Becky.

Great-grandchildren were Nichol Fletcher; Morgan and Meredith Wheeler; Libby Barnes; Alex Worley; Aliyah Mercier; and Gabriel Libby.

Rabbi Sky to speak

Rabbi Harry Sky will speak at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 5, at the Universalist Church of Westbrook, 719 Main St.

Sky’s topic will be “In Our Own Image.”

McCarthy joins Woman’s Club

The Westbrook Woman’s Club welcomed new member Kathie McCarthy at their Feb. 21 meeting.

Because the scheduled program was postponed, some of the members shared their craft items in a grownup “show and tell,” said Carol Quint, membership chair. Quint displayed the quilted wall hanging she designed as an entry in a keepsake quilting challenge.

President Evelyn Meserve displayed two antique quilt tops that have been in her family for over 50 years. She also showed a quilted Christmas table runner that she created.

Treasurer Elizabeth Young shared an Irish chain quilt in shades of purple that she made for her granddaughter and one of the knitted caps that she makes and donated regularly for children who are being treated for cancer at Maine Medical Center.

McCarthy showed samples of the silver jewelry she creates. And Georgia Therio displayed an assortment of her handmade cards.

The next club meeting will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7. Also that day, the members will host the Westbrook High School Art Show, which they sponsor annually.

Local artists Pat Sundik, Jan Curran and Andy Curran will judge the art and first, second and third prizes will be awarded. Student artists and their parents along with school dignitaries will be invited to view the art and join club members for refreshments at 2 p.m.

Veterans to meet, eat

The Stephen W. Manchester Post 62 of the American Legion will meet at 6 p.m. today, March 1, in their headquarters at 17 Dunn St.

A business meeting will follow a catered roast pork dinner, $8.

Downeast honors Wormell

Chad Wormell, loan officer for Downeast Mortgage Corporation, South Portland, was recently honored with the company’s Growth Award.

Wormell, a Westbrook native, received the award for commitment to the ideals of excellence in the workplace resulting in volume growth. He exceeded his 2004 closings by 285 percent.

Wormell joined Downeast Mortgage in August 2004. In addition to Maine, he maintains his mortgage brokers license in Florida, where he previously lived.

“As someone very familiar with Florida’s winter retreats and residential marketplace, I’m happy to help fellow Mainers secure financing for home purchases there,” he said.

Wormell and his wife, Sherisse, and daughter Olivia live in Westbrook.

Kelly Duquette lives in South Portland. Todd (TJ) Libby has been a member of the Portland Fire Department since his return from Iraq, where he was deployed for 16 months with the Army Reserve Unit of New England. Originally from Portland, Todd is a member of the Knights of Columbus, the International Association of Fire Fighters, VFW, AMVETS, and the American Legion. He appreciates the wealth of shared knowledge available at Flaherty Real Estate. “You are set up for success the second you come into the office with all the support and mentoring that you could want,” he said.

Jane Beecher Rice, who most recently worked for York Manor Apartments as property manager and currently works for APR Associates Property Management, brings experience in both human resource and property management to the organization. Senior USM recital

Wayne W. Malloy Jr., Westbrook, and Sarah E. Holt, Carmel, will present a senior recital at the University of Southern Maine.

The recital will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, in Corthell Concert Hall on the USM Gorham campus. This concert is free and open to the public. For more information call the Music Box Office at 780-5555. A reception will follow in the first floor lobby of Corthell.

Malloy’s trumpet and Holt’s contralto voice performances will include selections by Handel, Schubert, Brahms, and Strauss, as well as Paul Hindemith, Samuel Barber, and Jan Neruda.

The performers will be assisted by Aaron Robinson on piano.
