One of the two Westbrook men indicted by a Lincoln County grand jury last week for aggravated attempted murder and robbery, among other charges, was released from jail Wednesday after posting $20,000 cash bail.
Stephen J. Otis Jr., 25, of Westbrook walked out of the Lincoln County Jail in Wiscasset around 2 p.m. on Feb. 15, according to Lincoln County Detective Sgt. Jason Pease.
Otis was originally being held on $200,000 cash bail, but a Superior Court judge reduced it to $20,000 cash on Jan. 19.
Pease said conditions of Otis’ release include a curfew of 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Otis is also required to live with his parents, check in daily with the Westbrook Police Department, and not use or possess drugs, alcohol or firearms. He is subject to random searches of his residence and person and must submit to random drug and alcohol testing by law enforcement.
Otis and another Westbrook man, 30-year-old Michael Kelley, are accused of injuring two police officers in a chase after a January bank robbery in Newcastle.
They both face charges of aggravated attempted murder, robbery and elevated aggravated assault in connection with the robbery of the Gardiner Savings Institution’s Newcastle branch on Jan. 17. The Lincoln County grand jury also charged Kelley and Otis with aggravated assault, failure to stop for an officer, reckless conduct, passing a roadblock, and two counts each of aggravated criminal mischief and eluding an officer. All of the charges are felonies.
Kelley also faces a misdemeanor charge of theft by unauthorized taking for allegedly stealing a vehicle before the robbery. He remains in jail on bail of $100,000 cash or $250,000 real estate.
