Shortly before noon on Monday, a plow from the Westbrook Recreation Department fell through the ice while clearing the snow from Sunday’s storm off a skating rink on East Bridge Street.
Public Services Department Deputy Director John Emerson said the plow broke through a soft portion of the ice and the wheels sunk in a little ways on the edge of the rink. Public Services Department workers Larry Huntley and Doug Eaton went up to East Bridge Street and pulled the tractor by a chain out of the water, up a small hill, and onto the road. No one was hurt in the incident.
“Often times this occurs,” said Emerson. “We’ve had a few days of really cold weather. They probably thought it was sufficiently solid.”
According to Emerson, the Recreation Department plows the local ice rinks as a normal way of doing things. Sometimes they fall through, he said, but getting them out isn’t that big of a deal because the water is never very deep.
