The Lyric Music Theater presents Best Little Whorehouse in Texas from Feb. 17 through March 5. It will run Friday and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. And if the shows are sold out by the second week, a fourth weekend will be added.
The play is based on the true story of a Texas brothel know as the Chicken Ranch which flourished outside of La Grange, Texas from 1844 to 1973. This legendary institution, named during the Depression when customers were allowed to pay with poultry, was eventually shut down by the Governor of Texas after a weeklong expose by a Houston broadcaster. The play originally opened on Broadway in 1978 and ran for 1,584 performances before closing in 1982. It was nominated for 6 Tony awards, winning two for featured actress and actor, and 8 Drama Desk awards, winning for best lyrics, best music, and best direction. In 1982, a film version was released starring Dolly Parton as Miss Mona and Burt Reynolds as Sheriff Ed Earl.
The box offices opens Feb. 10 and tickets are $17 and $19. For reservations call 799-1421 or 799-6509.
