Really folks, the devil made me do it and I will gladly tell you why. I cannot agree with socialism for many reasons and the biggest reason is our government cannot tax us into prosperity.

Our country was founded as a republic in order for all of us to contribute, not take. Lately, in Windham and other Lakes Region communities, there are those who want something for nothing and they want us, the taxpayer, to pay for it.

First, to say nothing about foremost, is the Windham School Board and their quest in taxing every citizen in Windham into the poor house. The latest example is the day care center that’s located somewhere in the deep bowels of a school building. I understand this day care is a privately run business contained in a government (i.e., Windham school) building.

Why is that a problem? Was the day care put out to public bid like all government contracts should be or was this done on a shameful basis? Shouldn’t all day care businesses be able to bid on such a contract? Now I must state I do not know for sure but does this day care center pay for the use of the facilities such as rent, lights and other utilities? If not, why are they there? Maybe the Ethics Commission in Augusta needs to look into this one.

Oh Lord, I have to address this one next. How about that fellow that addressed the Windham Town Council and wanted more Public Works employees? Sounded great but the majority of Mainers that I spoke with had exactly the same answer. Live in Maine and you will see snow, and don’t expect city services when you move to the country. His complaint included the fact that his wife and children came home and there was a foot on snow on the road in his subdivision. I have to ask this question: Why were they out there in such a snowstorm in the first place?

The above are only the tip of the iceberg. Isn’t it time that the government remove itself (with our help, of course) away from something that a private business already does? If someone wants their child to take Karate classes, shouldn’t they pay for it instead of every taxpayer? We have gyms in our school buildings, why do we need a community center for more? Rent the gym and any other space out to private groups and make money.

I have no problem paying for what I use or what I want. What I have a huge problem with is people who continually want something for nothing and believe that it is their right.

If we want Maine to move forward and once again have a thriving economy, then it is up to each of us to be a part of the solution and not be part of the problem. Our present leadership in Maine expects that we will support higher taxes, I expect that we should boot them out of office.
