Those driving along Route 115 out of North Windham may have noticed a new set of stoplights at the intersection of Falmouth Road this week.
Earlier this week, work crews from Maine Department of Transportation and Monmouth-based A.D. Electric installed eight signals to direct traffic at the busy intersection of Falmouth Road, Crockett Road and Route 115.
According to Mark Pinkoski, project coordinator for MDOT, the lights will be switched to blinking status for the initial two weeks so motorists “can get used to” the new lights. During the next two weeks, motorists on Route 115 can expect a yellow blinking light urging caution. Motorists approaching the intersection from Falmouth or Crockett roads can expect to see blinking red lights, meaning they need to come to a full stop and proceed when Route 115 is clear. After two weeks is up, the signals will be fully operational.
Pinkoski hopes the new signals will prevent dangerous driving at the intersection.
“People on Route 115 come through here at 50 mph or more. The speed limit is 35 mph. Hopefully this will slow them down,” he said. “You’ve also got people coming up Falmouth Road getting frustrated because they have to wait so long, and then taking chances when they finally get a chance to get onto Route 115. This light should help relieve this, as well.”
While loop detectors are already set in the pavement approaching from all directions, stop lines won’t be painted until spring due to the weather, Pinkoski added.
