Called by the Hall

Among the 10 new members of the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame who will be inducted this summer are Brian Glazier of Cape Elizabeth and Alan Livingston of South Portland. Glazier has been sports director at WCSH since 1979 and was named Sportscaster of the Year in 1985. Livingston was a three-year starter at second base for UMaine in the 1970s and served as commissioner of the Portland Twilight League. The induction ceremony will take place at Portland’s Holiday Inn by the Bay on July 23 and tickets can be obtained after April 1 by calling Sonny Noel at 428-3678.

Swish for a good cause

The 12th annual Swish-Out Challenge 3-on-3 tournament will be held at USM on Sun., Feb. 12. Proceeds benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Since 1993, more than $55,000 has been raised through the event. Teams may be of any size with the only stipulation being that a member of the opposite sex is on the court at all times. Participants receive a prize just for playing, as well as a T-shirt. Plaques are awarded to the top four teams, with this year’s champion receiving a picnic for 20 people at a Portland Sea Dogs game. Space is limited to the first 36 teams to register. Scarborough Little League registration coming soon

Registration for the 2006 Scarborough Little League season will be held Saturday, Feb. 4 (9-11 a.m.), Sunday, Feb. 5 (noon-2 p.m.) and Tuesday, Feb. 7 (6-8 p.m.) in chambers A and B of Scarborough Town Hall. Any boy or girl from kindergarten age to 16 years old who lives in the town is eligible to enroll to play baseball or softball. All candidates are expected to register, regardless of past enrollment, and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Those signing up for the first time must provide proof of residence and an original or state-certified copy of the child’s birth certificate. The registration fee for T-Ball and Single A is $50; Minor and Major Leagues is $65; and Junior and Senior Leagues is $85 per child. Discounts are available for multiple children in Minor, Major, Junior and Senior leagues. There will be a $25 late fee per family on all registrations received after Feb. 15. Fashioning a good week

Lasell College basketball player Mandi Rapisardi was recently named as the North Atlantic Conference Co-Player of the Week. The senior, a fashion design and production major from Scarborough, averaged 19 points, seven rebounds and more than two steals a game over the span of a week. The Newton, MA-based Lasers are currently 8-6.

Jumping for winter

Maddie Sirois, a third grader at Wentworth School, was the winner Saturday at the Scarborough Winterfest Jump Rope Contest, sponsored by Scarborough Youth Sports Forum. The 8-year-old jumped 140 times to edge out Emma Greenwich (136 jumps) and Samantha Sparda (110 jumps), both 9. A total of 37 jumpers between the ages of 2 and 17 competed. Other winners included 2-year-old Sarah Flanders, 3-year-old Kendall Shevenell, 4-year-olds Leah Desveaux and Cameron Budway, 5-year-olds Katy Jutras and Dominic Agneta, 6-year-old Jillian Harvie, 7-year-old Bailey Shevenell, 8-year-old Lauren Tudor, 9-year-old Emma Greenwich and Justin Reynolds, 10-year-old Courtney Alofs and Andrew Hopkins and 11-year-old Taylor Leborgne.

Coaching spot open

Southern Maine Community College is currently accepting resumes for the assistant baseball coaching position. Position duties includes on-field coaching and recruitment of student athletes. SMCC, located in South Portland, is a member of the Yankee Small College Conference and plays both a fall and spring collegiate season. This position will remain open until a qualified candidate is identified.
