On Saturday, Feb. 26 at 9 a.m., Imagine Wireless/NEXTEL will be sponsoring the Snowmobile Speed Run on Sebago Lake. This event will be taking place on Saturday during the Sebago Lake Rotary Derby Fest. Registration starts at 8 a.m.
In all, eight snowmobile classes will compete for cash, trophies, and bragging rights on the 1,000 foot snowmobile speed course approximately a quarter-mile south of the Raymond Beach Festival area. Registration is $10 for two runs. First come, first serve – competitors may register for as many runs as time permits.
The fastest sled will win the $500 prize, and if the sled breaks Maine’s fastest record of 152.8 miles per hour, the daring driver will receive an extra bonus of $500.
Infrared radar will be used to time the sleds in the race because it is the most accurate, measuring the speed close to within a hundredth of a mile. There will be a hand-held radar gun available in case organizers need it.
“We’re anticipating a lot of sleds that day so we want to have back-up so everything runs smoothly,” says Tom Noonan, director of the snowmobile run.
Also that day, Polaris will be unveiling their new sled, the 600HO. Demo runs will be given throughout the day.
Due to the expected turnout of spectators, snowmobile passes will be sold for $10 each. With this pass you will be able to park your sled on the ice where you can view other events such as car and air shows as well as the snowmobile speed run. If you are entered in the derby you will not need to purchase a parking pass.
Shuttles will also be available along Route 302 where signs are posted. A donation of $10 per carload will be requested to ride the shuttle. The $10 covers a bus trip to the lake and a return trip, as well.
Depending on ice conditions, Noonan said the snowobile races will go on as scheduled using alternative lakes if necessary.
“We will have to see what happens, but the race will take place even if we have to move it,” Noonan said.
