Although the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI have been chasing down leads since last Saturday’s Gorham Savings Bank robbery in Standish, so far their search has turned up little, said Chief Deputy Kevin Joyce.
Brandishing a semiautomatic handgun, the thief shot into the air near the teller’s window at the bank before making off on foot with more than $4,000.
Despite employing a K-9 team, officials were unable to track down the suspect. They have not ruled out an accomplice or a getaway vehicle parked nearby.
Saturday’s robbery was the second for Gorham Savings Bank in less than a week. Last Friday, a man held up the Maine Mall branch in South Portland.
“It’s really hard for the people that were directly involved,” said Gorham Savings Bank President Chris Emmons. “The great news is that in each case, (the employees) responded magnificently – as the procedures were laid out.”
On Tuesday, according to Capt. Donald Goulet, officials from the Sheriff’s office, the FBI and other police agencies met to look for similarities between a rash of area robberies starting back in November. Though a final determination has not yet been made, Goulet said broadcasting the suspect’s photo has people calling with leads.
“I believe that’s the break we’re going to get,” he said. “Someone out there has seen something – a key piece.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Brian Ackerman of the Sheriff’s Office at 774-1444, extension 2215.
