I hope you’ve all had a wonderful fall and are ready for the upcoming winter. Why not take this winter to try out an adult education class. There are so many to choose from, and there’s certainly one that has your name on it! Perhaps it’s a chance to invite a friend or family member to join you.

We’re offering several Dance and Yoga classes this winter including Ballroom, Swing, Hip Hop and Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga. We also have a great choice of cooking classes to tempt your taste buds. Our What’s Cooking section includes offerings from around the world including Cajun Cooking, Mexican Magic, Japanese, Cooking with Soy and A Meal From India. Bring your appetite and learn how to make some fantastic new meals for your family to enjoy.

Other new courses include: What You Always Wanted to Know About Beekeeping, Happy Feet, a Greening Our World series, and Stop Smoking The Hypnosis Way. Join members of our local Historical Societies and learn about the Old Red Church and the Marrett House. And Mary Morton Cowan returns to discuss Maine’s Forest Heritage with her book, Timberrr, A History of Logging in New England.

A few returning courses include Becoming A Notary, An Evening with Portland Press Herald columnist Bill Nemitz, Medical Terminology, and QuickBooks. Once again, Moe Auger is offering Take the Scare Out of Watercolors. Or try your hand at Chair Caning, Rug Braiding, or Stained Glass.

Silver Clay Jewelry was so popular with Sue Young this fall, that she’s offering two new courses: Continuing Silver Clay & Chainmaille Bracelet and Multi Media Wire Sculpture Pendant. (For beginners, she’s teaching the introductory level again.) And of course, Kristin Phaneuf returns with an expanded bead making series.

Why not improve your green thumb and be ready for spring by taking one of our gardening classes. (I’m curious to see how many people sign up for our Saturday gardening classes.) Royce O’Donal will demonstrate how to create Topiaries, and Nancy Stedman will welcome you at her Little River Flower Farm greenhouse.

Back-by-demand is Betsey Golon’s Lavender class, as well as Designing Your Dream Garden, and a chance to get some free seeds and catalogues with Seeds, Seeds, Seeds! MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association) also returns with their free workshop on Growing An Organic Garden.

Please don’t forget the academic side of Adult Education. For those of you returning to college who need to fulfill a Chemistry prerequisite, class starts Monday, January 22. Other College Transition courses include Math Essentials for College, Algebra and Writing and Composition. SMCC also keeps expanding their course offerings at Bonny Eagle. Why not take classes closer to home and avoid that long drive to South Portland, especially during the winter months!

And don’t forget that Adult Education can help you brush up on reading or math in order to get a better job or help your kids with homework. Thirty-three adults earned their GED through adult education last year. Be a member of the class of 2007! Call us!

The Winter/Spring brochure will be mailed right after the holidays, and hopefully will be on our webpage before you receive it in the mail @ www.sad6 (click on the adult education link). Registration begins immediately. See you this winter! And don’t forget the brochure covers mid-January through May courses.

Warm regards,

Cathy Walz
