The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office continued its crackdown on drivers operating after suspension with its latest license checkpoint, located on Route 35 in Standish.

According to Capt. William Rhoads, six members of the Habitual Offender Strike Force checked about 300 operator licenses between 5 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. last Thursday.

“We hadn’t gone to Standish yet so we figured we’d hit people headed to Windham,” Rhoads said. “Hopefully, in the near future, we’ll work with the Windham Police Department to set one up there.”

Two Standish residents, John E. Kenney, 36, of 39 Perimeter Ave. and Edward Shaw, 34, of 227 Job Road, were arrested for operating after suspension and for outstanding warrants for failing to appear on the charge of driving with suspended licens es. Both were transported to the Cumberland County Jail.

In addition, a summons was issued for Standish resident Benjamin T. Larrabee, 40, for operating a vehicle with a suspended registration. Eight warnings were given out for inspection and registration violations.

Rhoads said the department has also been stepping up traffic enforcements. During the first three days of the new year, Cumberland County deputies have stopped about 260 vehicles on speeding, registration or inspection violations.

“One car we stopped came back with a stolen sticker,” Rhoads said, “and it turned out it was a copy of that stolen sticker. Another had suspended plates.”

The department has also discovered that cars sporting expired inspection stickers come up with the greatest number of drivers operating after suspension.
