The Gorham Tannery was located on Main Street in the present day location of Rite Aid, Burger King and Goodwill. In the 1800s, tanning animal hides was a thriving business in Gorham with local businessmen engaged in the industry. The tanners made the leather from which the town folk made shoes for their families.
