After nine years, Cheryl Roma decided to step down from the Westbrook School Committee this year in order to spend more time with her family.

Roma didn’t seek re-election to her School Committee seat this year after serving since 1996. Roma, the mother of three grown children, also has a 16-month old grandchild. “That’s my focus now,” she said.

Roma filled a vacant seat on the School Committee in 1996 and since has been elected twice to four-year terms. “I thought it was time to let fresh ideas take over,” Roma said.

Colleen Hilton, School Committee chairwoman, described Roma as quiet in public but she was someone who was not afraid to weigh in on significant issues. Hilton said Roma was very thoughtful and represented Ward 3 well. “A wonderful person. We’ll miss her dearly,” Hilton said.

Roma said she would miss the students and the staff. “I absolutely enjoyed it,” she said.
