Local dog owners have until the end of January to license their dogs in order to avoid late fees.

Connie Loughran, deputy town clerk in Gorham, said dog licenses for this year expire on Saturday, Dec. 31. All dogs six months and older are required to be licensed.

The fee for spayed and neutered dogs is $6 with half of it going to the state. A license costs $10 for unaltered dogs with the municipality only keeping $1.

Loughran said dog owners have grace through the end of January before a $15 late is charged, starting Feb. 1, in addition to the dog license fee. Dog owners also need to show a rabies shot certificate, which shows an expiration date.

Buxton licensed 1,302 dogs this year, according to Brenda Brown, an assistant town clerk. Loughran said Gorham licensed 1,239 dogs this year and Westbrook had 1,092, according to Christine Gallant, customer service supervisor in Westbrook’s Finance Department.

The 2006 licenses have been available since Oct. 15.
