This unusual trio is off to see the Wizard. Their wish is to find a forever home together. Toto and Scarecrow are male cockatiels. Dorothy is a Peach-Faced Lovebird; we believe her to be female.
This trio was surrendered to the Animal Refuge League when their previous owner passed away. Dorothy is very shy and prefers to stay at the back of the cage when approached, but does listen intently and responds with chirps and tweets when spoken to. She is an accomplished escape artist and has been known to let her brothers free once she’s managed to break out.
Toto and Scarecrow, on the other hand, are far more outgoing. Though not hand tame, they vie for attention when their caregivers approach the cage, and will chat endlessly with “their” people. Toto is particularly confident and will not hesitate to give “what for” to any cat who dares stick his nose near the cage.
They truly are delightful, each with unique personalities! When the three arrived, they were treated for giardia, an intestinal parasite common in birds, especially cockatiels. This parasite causes malabsorption of nutrients. Afflicted birds usually have intensely itchy skin and frequently pull their feathers out. Based on research, the avian form of giardia is believed not to be contagious to humans or other mammals. It is, however, transmittable to other companion birds. Dorothy, Toto and Scarecrow have recently tested negative for giardia and are now looking for Oz.
