Santa Claus (Westbrook Fire Department Call Company Capt. Jim Harbaugh) and one of his elves (Renee Brown) made the rounds of Westbrook Saturday morning, an early visit made possible by the Westbrook Fire Department. Santa delivered gifts to 40 families in the city bringing smiles and more to 84 kids and their families said Capt. Rick Dorr, who organized the event.

After Friday’s storm dumped a coating of ice on the Mighty Street hill in Gorham, the young and the young-at-heart got on their sleds to take advantage of the slippery conditions. Windham’s Bill Burtt led the way, showing the youngsters how to take flight off a hillside snow jump.

The icy end to Friday’s snowstorm meant extra work for Westbrook firefighters as they made their way around the city clearing out hydrants. Mark Giroux and Jim Blanche, firefighters from Engine 2 Company, used an axe and shovel to attack the crusty deposits on Spring Street Sunday.
