A Standish man was killed instantly when his car flipped on Route 114 late Sunday night.

Roger Gould, 35, of 2 Chadbourne Road, was driving west on Route 114, about a mile after the Route 35 intersection when he failed to negotiate a curve, said Captain William Rhoads of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Gould was alone in the car and no other cars were involved in the crash.

Sergeant David Hall responded to the emergency call that came in just before 11:30 p.m. When he arrived at the accident scene, Hall found Gould’s 1996 Oldsmobile on its roof with the driver still in the car. In addition to Hall, three deputies assisted at the scene.

After reconstructing the accident, Hall determined that Gould had been driving at a high rate of speed when he missed a left-hand curve and went off the road to the right. At that point his car was propelled more than 60 feet through the air, landing upright before it smashed into a tree and flipped onto its roof.

The Sheriff’s Office believes alcohol may be a factor in the accident and is awaiting blood test results.
