Do you follow any special Christmas traditions?
Janet Mitchell, 39, Casco
“We have a tradition of opening one present on Christmas Eve. We’ve done it since we were kids. As a kid, we opened our stockings early on Christmas morning while the parents slept. It gave them a few more minutes to get some shut-eye.”
Christine Williams, 40, Windham
“We slide down over the hill to Grandpa’s house on Christmas Day. They live right next door to us so we go there in the afternoon. The family is still kind of young so we haven’t developed too many traditions yet.”
Debby McLaine, 36, Windham
“My son and I write our list for Santa out at the beginning of December and we mail it. He writes it all by himself and puts it in the mailbox. On Christmas Eve we open one present each. And then he picks out the cookies that Santa would like. We also put out the carrots for the reindeer. My son feels bad for the reindeer. He’s so cute.”
Ed Nuff, 62, Windham
“My family does a Yankee Swap with a $10 limit every year. We usually eat a ham dinner at one of the kids’ houses or at my house. We also usually go to North Windham Union Church on Christmas Eve.”
Dave Dyer, 44, Standish
“We go to my mom and dad’s house every Christmas Eve for a large family get-together. That’s about the biggest tradition we have. I’m a firefighter for the city of South Portland and I have worked a lot of Christmas Eves. But when I’m at home on Christmas Eve, it’s even more special.”
Ricky Logan, 14, Windham
“We normally stay at home and mom cooks a ham on Christmas Day. We open up one present on Christmas Eve. We do stockings, too.”
