The Maine Association of School Libraries recently named Jan Breton as the 2005 recipient of the Library Media Service Award for administrators.

Breton is the director of curriculum, instruction and assessment for the Westbrook school system. A plaque noting Breton’s accomplishments and a $500 donation to the district’s school libraries was awarded in a ceremony on Nov. 15.

Announcing the award in October at the annual Maine Libraries Conference in Augusta, Nancy Grant, representing the school library association board, noted Breton’s support for Westbrook school libraries and her role in developing plans for collection development and curriculum instruction.

Submitting Breton’s nomination, Patricia Brasslow, library media specialist in Westbrook, lauded not only Breton’s three-year library and media resources replacement plan, but also her success in finding grant money to support the plan. Additionally, Brasslow praised Breton’s commitment to helping students become life-long learners by providing them with the opportunity to develop information literacy skills through the library curriculum and in the wider school setting.

Deborah Locke, Westbrook High School librarian, supported the nomination. “Her recognition of the core role of strong school libraries in supporting literacy and academic success for students has resulted in significant gains for our libraries’ collections and programs,” Locke wrote.

The award honors an administrator who through individual leadership and sustained effort has made worthy contributions to the operation of effective school media services.

Congratulations, Aaron

Unlike recent years, Aaron Barbour didn’t come home empty handed from his annual hunting trip to Greenville this year. He shot a 212-pound, 13-point buck.

Barbour’s wife, Heather, said his hunting buddies, Charlie and Bill, told her that he didn’t seem to be excited at first. “They believed he was in shock,” she said. “But once he saw how big it was he couldn’t believe it.”

Barbour and his wife live in Gray, but both grew up in Westbrook. He is the son of Linda and Paul Barbour of Spring Street.
