Back in the late 1700s, the White family settled in our area. They were in the lumber business. First, Enoch White built a sawmill at Great Falls; his son, John White, made a fortune in his many ventures including something called “Eastern Land speculation; John’s son, John M. White (shown here), inherited the property near North Gorham’s Great Falls (the source of the power for the saw mills). According to history, John M. White “did little business on the falls,” having acquired an “ample” fortune. This family is remembered 300 years later by the name of the bridge connecting the towns of Gorham and Windham: White’s Bridge, and the several houses they built which still stand.
