Boys Track
Coach: Paul Brogan (37 years)
Winter 2004-05 Record: 6-3; fourth in southwesterns and fourth in the states
How did last season end: “Season ended at the New Englands, with two boys earning medals.”
Key veterans: Tom McCoubrey and Dillon Houser (shot put); Alex Gato (jumps and pole vault); Matt Bremermann and Francis Huynh (hurdles); David Knowland, Brian Huynh and Mike Welch (distance); Will Cabana, Ian Golder and Eric Bodwell (sprints)
Key newcomers: “Many promising new runners on a team of 50 boys.”
Key concern: “We’re a young team, especially in the distances and jumping events.”
Coach’s outlook: “We hope to have balance and to be highly competitive in every meet. We have two returning state meet scorers to build around, but our younger runners are going to have to develop quickly to be competitive at the state level.”
Girls Track
Coach: Bob Zinchuk (12 years)
Winter 2004-05 Record: 5-5 regular season
How did last season end: Fourth in southwesterns, 12th in states
Key veterans: Seniors Anna Meuse (sprints and middle distance) and Makayla Macklin distance; juniors Lindsay Soule (hurdles, middle distance, relays), Dana O’Leary (sprints and jumps), Kathryn Card (hurdles), Kristina Aceto (sprints relays), Ali Kill (distance); sophomore Kendall Morong (distance).
Key newcomers: Freshman Kirsten Bakke
Key concern: “Lack of depth, as the numbers are slightly down.”
Coach’s outlook: “We should be very good in the hurdles, jumps and distance events.”
Girls Basketball
Coach: Mike Giordano (10th year)
Winter 2004-05 Record: 18-0 and SMAA Champions; 19-1 overall
How did last season end: Lost in overtime 49-43 to Sanford in the Western Maine semifinals
Key veterans: Senior Emily Haeuser, center; juniors Jackie Rice, guard, Christina Aceto, guard, and Libby King, guard/forward; sophomores Kelsey Flaherty, guard and Jessica Aceto, guard
Key newcomers: Freshman Brianna Hawkins and sophomore Amanda Bodge, both forward/centers
Key concern: “We lost 35 points a game to graduation. Who will pick up the slack?”
Coach’s outlook: “We will continue to play an up-tempo game with the guards we have returning. Look for our young post players to develop at the season progresses. This could be the key to our success in the tourney. We hope to finish in the top five in the west.”
Boys Basketball
Coach: Tony DiBiase (17th year)
Winter 2004-05 Record: 12-8
How did last season end: Lost to Portland in the second round
Key veterans: David Seavey, third-team all-conference
Key newcomers: Coleman Findlay and Dustin Dow
Key concern: “Inexperience. We lost four starters.”
Coach’s outlook: “Our team’s success will depend on how soon our inexperienced players adapt to Class A basketball.”
Boys Hockey
Coach: Bart Keinath (second year)
Winter 2004-05 Record: 2-18
Key veterans: Seniors F Tim Clark, F Jason Battle, D John Gerndron, G Matt Michaud and G Amanda Texeira
Key newcomers: Junior Paul Cobb; freshmen Nick Fornault, Brendan Martin and Dusty Matthews
Key concern: “Having a short bench with only 13 skaters.”
Coach’s outlook: “We’re going to do well with some senior leadership. We have a great first line and two excellent goalies. We look to consistently improve, and we will make the playoffs.”
Swimming & Diving
Coach: Rob Card (first year at SP, long-time Westbrook coach)
Winter 2004-05 Record: Girls 2-4; Boys 3-4
How did last season end: The boys were eighth at Class A state championship; the girls were sixth at Class A state championship
Key veterans: Girls: Alison Rowell, Ana Bosone, Victoria Stiles, Jamie Reinhold, Meghan Gallagher, Molly Bogart and Becky Braley
Boys: Kyle Crozier, Jim Robichaud and Joe McGrehan
Key newcomers: Girls: Brittanie Walsh; Boys: Will York
Key concern: “After a four-year absence, the Riots will be having home swim meets.”
Coach’s outlook: “Both teams will be very competitive in the dual meet seasons and championship meets.”
Cheerleading
Coach: Bridget King (seventh year)
How did last season end: “The Red Riots had a very successful season last year finishing seventh in regional competition, second at “Cheers from the Heart” and first at the Scarborough Invitational.”
Key veterans: Seniors Jessica Peterson, Chad Ayotte, Jodi Hammith and Samantha McDonough
Coach’s outlook: “The Red Riots are a strong veteran team and as long as we can stay healthy we will be able to compete with state’s top cheerleading programs.”
