Mill No. 2 of the Westbrook Manufacturing Company was built on Bridge Street in 1868 with a belfry containing the mill bell that was used to summon employees to work. Westbrook Manufacturing company produced “duck,” which was a heavy cotton cloth or canvas used for sails, tents and other purposes that required a strong sturdy material. The company prospered until a large flood on the Presumpscot River in March of 1896 caused considerable damage. The company never recovered and closed later that year.
Dana Warp Mill purchased the building and occupied it until 1956. The upper floors of the building became unsafe and were dismantled in later years. The Mill Bell was given to the First Baptist Church and presently hangs in the belfry there. Stultz Electric purchased the building in 1956 and occupied it until it was sold and demolished to make way for One Riverfront Plaza.
