Police are still investigating the cause of a single-car crash which killed a 70-year-old Portland man on Route 25 in Gorham Monday morning.

Lt. Chris Sanborn of Gorham Police Department said James A. Green Jr. was traveling east on Ossipee Trail (Route 25) near the intersection with Farrington Road at approximately 8 a.m. when the accident occured. Sanborn said Green, who was driving a white 1995 four-door Pontiac Grand Prix, veered across the highway’s westbound and breakdown lanes and into a ditch, hitting a culvert.

Sanborn said the car went airborne before striking the ground, hitting a group of trees before coming to rest. Police said Green was thrown from the car on impact. He was taken to Maine Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Green was the only one in the car.

Sanborn said road condition was not a factor in the crash.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department assisted Gorham Police in reconstructing the accident, which is still under investigation. The accident closed both travel lanes of Route 25 to traffic while crews worked to clear the road.
