In 1976, Windham and the nation celebrated the Bicentennial of the country. A booklet was published by Windham’s Bicentennial Committee, and included were many stories about the way things used to be and in some cases, photos. This 1928 photo shows what the school bus looked like. Ralph Lowell was the first recognized school bus driver. Before Ralph got started, there were folks in other parts of town who used to “transport” the kids in their neighborhoods, mostly by horse and wagon. Take a look at this old bus and be thankful that today’s transportation is, by comparison, pretty streamlined! Photo courtesy of Windham Historical Society
