Gorham man’s sister retires

Denise L. Lancaster has retired from the Army and Air Force Exchange Service after 12 years. She is the sister of John Bolinger of Huston Road.

Lancaster, daughter of Madonna Smith of Peru, Ind., was a hardlines manager. Lancaster’s husband, Robert Lancaster, is the son of Robert F. and Dixie Lancaster of Miami, Ind.

Local composers featured in USM recital

Works of two composers from Gorham will be featured in the Fall 2005 Composers Showcase recital at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, in Corthell Concert Hall on the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine.

The recital will include works by Christenia Alden-Kinne and Asher Platts among 10 composers. Alden-Kinne is pursuing a degree in music composition to add to her existing degrees in dramatic art and English. Platts was introduced to music for the first time four years ago and has been studying sounds and the different ways they are perceived when organized in a different way.

More than 30 musicians will perform a number of world premieres in the recital, which will include performances by the USM String Quartet and the Pastel Sound Explosion Jazz Orchestra.

Holiday concert at GHS

The Casco Bay Concert Band will present “Many Moods of Christmas” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, in the Performing Arts Center at Gorham High School on Morrill Avenue.

Dr. Peter Martin is the conductor.

USM financial aid night

The Financial Aid Office at the University of Southern Maine is hosting two sessions 6:30-8 p.m. on separate dates for seniors and their parents about financial aid.

The first will be on Wednesday, Dec. 7, on the university’s Gorham campus. The second date will be on Thursday, Dec. 8, on the Portland campus.

Baxter holiday open house

The Baxter Memorial Library, 71 South St., will hold its annual holiday open house 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 10.

Santa will be on hand and the festivities will include refreshments, crafts and gift ideas. Visitors are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped item appropriate for a young adult age 10 to 18. The gifts will be placed under the library’s Giving Tree and will be distributed to Gorham families in need.

The Baxter House Museum next to the library will also be open. The family home of the Baxters, including Gov. Percival P. Baxter, was built in 1797. Gov. Baxter was the son of James Phinney Baxter, the benefactor who gave the home to the town and money to build the library.

The Baxter Memorial Library Association and the Trustees of the Library and Museum are inviting everyone to join them for the holiday fun.

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Tuesday, Nov. 22, that U.S. public debt was $8,089,004,553,905.72.
