After about two hours of spelling Maine-related words such as spinnaker (as in sailboat), Cujo (as in Stephen King’s thriller), and Tenants (as in harbor), the first annual Windham Education Foundation’s Spelling Bee came to an end with the Windham School Department’s team of administrators taking home the coveted first place trophy. Superintendent Sandy Prince, Assistant Superintendent Donn Davis and Curriculum Coordinator Chris Howell won after successfully spelling Wytopitlock and Meduxnekeag. “It was just exhilerating. Honestly, it was a lot of fun,” Davis said. The event, hosted by Maine humorist Tim Sample and held Thursday night in the auditorium of the Windham High School, saw 18 teams compete. At $300 per team, and with at least 100 in the audience, the event netted just under $2,000 for the newly formed foundation, according to organizer Toby Pennels.
