Hannaford is planning a major renovation of the Scarborough store that is expected to begin in January and will last for several months.
According to Hannaford Public Affairs and Media Relations Manager Caren Epstein, Scarborough will be essentially getting a brand new store, both inside and out.
“The interior of the store, including layout, decor, lighting, signage, shelving, etc. will be completely revamped,” Epstein wrote in an e-mail. “There’s no part of the store that won’t be touched.”
The building’s faA?§ade also will be renovated and a small expansion of about 1,100 square feet is proposed for the front of the building, increasing the building’s total square footage to 52,000.
The front of the store will look more like Saco or Westbrook, Epstein said. There will be a separate new pharmacy entrance added as well.
Due to competitive reasons, Epstein would not provide an exact completion date, but said the reasons the project will take so long are because the existing store will remain open the entire time and the amount of work to be donee.
Hannaford met with the Scarborough Planning Board on Monday to review its plans.
Courtyard Marriott also is requesting permission to building a 91-room hotel on Southborough Drive. The actual hotel will be located in South Portland, but a portion of the parking lot is located in Scarborough.
The project is being proposed by Dorks R Us, the development entity of Maine Course Hospitality Group, a Freeport-based company that operates a number of hotels and restaurants in the state, including the Ground Round.
Because the project falls into both Scarborough and South Portland, both municipalities must accept the plans that fall into their boundaries before it can move forward.
