The Maine Association of School Libraries has honored Westbrook Assistant School Superintendent Jan Breton with its 2005 Library Media Service Award.

Breton was nominated for the award by Westbrook Library Media Specialist Patricia Brasslow, who told the association Breton deserved the honor for her commitment to strengthen the school district’s libraries and her efforts to secure grant money to help keep the district’s library resources up to date. The association gives the award annually to a school administrator who has made significant contributions to the operation of effective school media services.

“Her recognition of the core role of strong school libraries in supporting literacy and academic success for students has resulted in significant gains for our libraries’ collections and programs,” said Westbrook High School Librarian Deborah Locke.

The association announced the award at its annual conference in Augusta last month. In addition to a plaque noting Breton’s support for the school libraries, the association will also be making a $500 donation to the Westbrook school libraries in honor of Breton.
