The Portland area Council of Governments wants the Maine Board of Environmental Protection broken up into regional boards. It took that position after the BEP first rejected, then permitted development of an industrial park in Scarborough that borders on the big Scarborough Marsh.

A new bandstand will rise in Westbrook’s Riverbank Park, where the bandstand was torn down at least 15 years ago after being vandalized. The new one will be of concrete and steel, with wooden roof. The S. D. Warren Co. has given $5,000 for it, Sebago, Inc. has given $2,000, and the Knights of Columbus have raised $4,000.
Tom Andrews, Democrat, defeated David Emery, Republican incumbent, for U. S. representative for Maine’s First District, 312,835 – 196,214.
Lewis Beckford is asking that South Portland restore a seniors-only period at its indoor swimming pool and reduce its fee for senior swimmers, which now is $1 a day. Seniors swim free in Cape Elizabeth and Westbrook, and have a seniors-only period in Westbrook. Beckford said the new rules have changed what was a social event much like what the Roman baths must have been.
Jack Gordon wants to expand his five-acre gravel pit on Mighty Street, Gorham.
Close after the election of Julie Conroy to the South Portland Board of Education, a set of rules for members appears on tonight’s agenda. It would restrict members’ contacts with the press and voters. Conroy has been a leader of the South Portland Concerned Taxpayers Association. Reginald MacDonald, school superintendent, could not be reached for comment.

Nadia Eadle and Anne Varney, teachers, are starting a monthly newspaper at Westbrook Junior High School. They expect from 20 to 30 students to spend three hours a week working on it.
Westbrook schools are introducing world geography in Grade 7 and U.S. history in Grade 8.
Standish may lease land for five years at $1 a year from the Portland Water District to park another 250 cars at the Otter Pond Road parking lot that served the Sebago Lake ballfield.

For state representative for Westbrook, it was Bill Lemke, Democrat, 1811, over Phil Curran, Republican, 1,704.
Elected to the Scarborough Town Council are Judith Murray 2,573, Gary Lorfano 2,153, and Edward Wheeler 1,656.

Blanche and Jim Jordan have lived at 919 Spring St., Westbrook, 38 years and for the first time Saturday their house was surrounded by the waters of Blanchette Brook. The city placed sandbags that protected their house until the water went down.
