Gorham youths in concert

Nine Gorham youths will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, in Merrill Auditorium in Portland.

Angela Doxsey, Cassandra McBride, Thomas Portlock, Aaron Seale and Vincent Smart, all of Gorham, will perform in the world premier performance of “Rumplestiltskin” with the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. It was composed by Nicholas Boland, a student in the School of Music at the University of Southern Maine.

Conducted by Robert Lehmann of Scarborough, the orchestra will also perform other selections.

Doxsey, who is a Waynflete student, and McBride, who is homeschooled, play violin; Seale of Thornton Academy, trumpet; Smart, percussion; and Portlock plays oboe. Smart and Portlock are Gorham High School students.

Adrienne Rosenblatt, percussion, and Jennie Wiacek, clarinet, will perform along with Portlock, Seale, and Smart as members of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, which opens the program. With Dr. Douglas T. Owens of Gorham conducting, the ensemble will play three selections. Rosenblatt and Wiacek are Gorham High School students.

Sara Martin of Gorham High School will play violin as the Portland Young People’s String Consort performs several selections under the direction of Deborah Dabczynski of Harrison.

Megan Bilodeau of Gorham High School will play violin with the Portland Youth Junior Orchestra, conducted by Dan Keller of Waterville.

The concert is sponsored by the University of Southern Maine and Bank of America. The Gorham students are among 200 high and middle school students who rehearse weekly at the university for two annual concerts. The suggested donation at the door is $6, $3.

Parent series continues

A parent information series, “Navigating the Adolescent Years: Ages 11-18,” continues 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the library at Gorham High School, 41 Morrill Ave.

This month’s topic is Substance Abuse Prevention and Detection. The meeting is free.

Historians meet Monday

The Gorham Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, in the operations center of the Gorham Savings Bank off Gray Road.

Free community dinner

The Gorham Ecumenical Commission is hosting its free, monthly community dinner at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28, at First Parish Church, 1 Church St.

The dinner offers fellowship and friendship to community members.

Gorham recognized nationally

Kelly Littlefield, president of the local teachers association, said Gorham would receive the 2005 Partnership Award from the National Education Association, United Auto Workers and Saturn at 4 p.m. today, Nov. 9, at the Saturn dealership in Westbrook.

The award honors Gorham for mentoring new teachers in programs created and sustained by the local school district and the local teachers’ association.

Gorham is one of six school systems in the country to receive the award this year.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Friday, Nov. 4, that the U.S. public debt was $8,028,449,101,487.38.
