Annual meeting of the Raymond Village Library Corporation
The second annual meeting of the Raymond Village Library Corporation was held at the library on Sept. 30. Reports were given by officers and committees. A printed report of the Year in Review, listing many of the activities accomplished in the past year as well as the some of the programs including Community Liaison, Children’s Programs, Adult and Family Programs, professional Development for the Staff, Volunteers and Board.
Four new members were elected to the Board of Trustees, expanding the Board to nine members, to help implement the Three-Year Plan. The new members are: Brenda Stevenson, Cheryl Laz, Monica Hanson and Suzanne Bruno. The remaining members are Laurie Forbes, President, Lori Rand, Vice-President, Deb Hutchinson, Secretary, Carol Meader, Treasurer, and Louise Murray, Past President. Among those attending the meeting were Town Manager Don Willard and Selectmen Betty McDermott and Lonnie Taylor.
Holiday raffle
Generous patrons have made donations to be raffled as a fund-raiser for the library. There are six items to be raffled: a Ladybug Beaded Bag, a White Beaded Bag, a Black and White Beaded Bag, a Purple Beaded Bag, an Afghan and Pillow Set and a whimsical Noah’s Ark Picture. These beautiful items can be seen at the library and the tickets, $1 each or 6 for $5, can be purchased at the library. Please be sure to indicate the item you wish on your ticket. The drawing will be held at the Holiday Bake Sale on Dec. 11.
Art exhibit
A truly lovely and most unusual exhibit is now on display at the library. A local artist from Casco, Om Devi Reynolds says she mostly paints in an abstract mode, with oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas or paper; and Sumi-e ink on paper or cloth. Om Devi explains that her art echos her life-long involvement with nature. When painting, she finds herself in a process of listening and responding while exploring color, line and form. Her comment, “It is great fun to make visual attempts of a realm beyond sensation and realistically perceived imagery,” helps to explain the joy one feels while reflecting on her art.
This is a definite “not to be missed” treat.
Pajama story time
The Pajama Party with stories, songs and other fun, will be held at the library, Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Once again we will be treated to Jody Fein, super storyteller. This year, this special story time is sponsored by the Raymond Village Library and the Raymond PTA. This is a fun time for everyone and Pajama wearing is strongly encouraged to add to the fun and insure all are in bed on time!
Tree lighting
The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, sponsored by the Raymond Lions Club, will be held Nov. 27 at 5 p.m., at the library. This is a community affair and everyone is cordially invited to join us for fun and refreshments.
Reading group
The reading group will meet Nov. 30 at 7 pm, to discuss Malcolm Gladwell’s, “The Tipping Point.” Mr. Gladwell is also known for his book, “Blink.” New members are always welcome. The Reading Group will not be meeting in December, but will resume in January, 2006. For more information, please call the library at 655-4283.
Middle School Murder Mystery
Sherlock Holmes would have been proud of the investigative skills of the 33 youth sleuths put in charge of solving a mystery at Raymond Village Library Friday, Oct. 14.
The Middle School students attending were given the task of figuring out who was responsible for the murder of a librarian in charge of a Rock Concert. The group of sleuths read descriptions of the suspects, viewed video footage of the suspect’s alibis, and investigated designated crime scenes set up in the library. Everyone had to carefully look through paperwork, letters, notes, and anything else that was a potential clue to who might have wanted this librarian dead.
Food was provided for these clever students who did a great job analyzing information, compiling notes, and making logical assumptions as to who the culprit was and why. Four different groups solved the crime with the correct motive, 2 other groups had the correct suspect, and the others proved to have interesting theories about the whole crime.
Super sleuths were recognized with an assortment of prizes and everyone went home a winner!
Thanks must be given to Lisa Friedlander for her creative ways of making Raymond Village Library fun for everyone! And for offering yet another successful program to Raymond’s youth. Thanks also to the students and teachers for allowing Lisa to videotape their “performances” prior to the event. Participants enjoyed watching fellow classmates and teachers playing another role!
Murder Mystery Night
The Chicago Cheeky Chicks vs. The Boston Odd Sox proved to be more than just a friendly game of baseball. Somehow the pitcher for the Cheeky Chicks wound up dead on the pitchers mound! Who did it? Was it one of her jealous teammates, a fan of the opposing team, one of the Boston Odd Sox with a reason to want her dead? And what would that reason be?
All of this drama unfolded at Little Wohelo Lodge in Raymond where Raymond Village Library held its’ annual Murder Mystery Night fundraiser. With attendees given their parts to play before the event, each person dressed in character and arrived at the lodge with ballpark foods awaiting them.
This year’s theme, Women’s League Baseball of 1944, made for fun baseball attire, a relaxed atmosphere, and a satisfying assortment of pizzas, pretzels, hotdogs, sausages, salads, and popcorn for everyone to enjoy. As characters milled about the lodge they asked questions of each other attempting to gain insight as to who might have wanted Petticoat Peterson dead.
Clues were given throughout the evening, with a list of suspects reported by the police officer investigating this crime. Everyone had great fun playing their parts and trying to solve this case. There was even a bit of adlibbing going on, just to spice up the event!
Near the end of this hilarious evening people were instructed to make their guesses as to “who dunnit” with a motive included. Prizes were given to those who solved this mystery and to those who stayed in character.
As a finale there was an auction for an embroidered handbag, an official Boston Red Sox hat (worn by a World Series Champ), a baseball autographed by David Ortiz, and a baseball autographed by Johnny Damon! These fabulous items brought in close to $700. making the overall earnings for Raymond Village Library from this fundraiser $1,500! What a tremendous success!
