Trash tricksters

Westbrook Public Services Department hauled away trash on Monday that was dumped over the Halloween weekend near recycling bins in the Mechanic Street parking lot. The bins were apparently filled, although recyclables are collected regularly.

Keith Cummings and Paul Pettis cleaned up the mess and hauled it away in a city truck. Cummings checked address labels on magazines and learned some of the debris came from a neighboring town.

Tom Eldridge, director Westbrook Public Services, said recycling bins in the parking lot are emptied on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Material in bins at the Prides Corner Church on Pride Street and at the National Guard Armory on Stroudwater Street is collected each Wednesday.

Eldridge said the past weekend was a rain-free one, probably prompting an increase in use of the downtown recycling bins. When bins were filled, trash was left piled in the parking lot.

Historical society searching for memorabilia

The Westbrook Historical Society is always looking for information on many topics. Presently, we are interested in gathering stories of Westbrook veterans. We have an extensive collection organized by Phil LaViolet and we are now interested in oral histories of our veterans. If you would like to contribute to this project, please contact Donna Conley at 854-2464.

We are always interested in Westbrook genealogies along with any information or photos. If you don’t want to part with an original photo, we could photocopy so it can be part of the growing collection. We would like older photos and histories of Westbrook homes. We have a special collection of house histories and are looking to add to it.

Another project is the gathering of information regarding Westbrook musicians. If they were known for their musical abilities (not necessarily famous), we are interested in their stories and photos.

Old diaries provide a window to Westbrook’s past. If you should have any old letters or diaries pertaining to Westbrook’s history, we would be delighted if you would share them with us.

Lastly, Westbrook has a rich immigrant history. There are many stories that need to be recorded about those who came to work in the mills (Danish, French, Irish, etc) We are interested in anything descendants can provide regarding their immigrant ancestors who came to Westbrook (photos, letters and stories). It does not have to be 100 years ago – history is ongoing. – By Suzan Norton, secretary of Westbrook Historical Society
