Edward Newell is sparking a drive to “keep the heat on” in Buxton.

Newell, a retired educator, is worried about Buxton citizens staying warm this winter. So, he is organizing a bottle drive, raising money to help needy families meet spiraling home heating costs. Money raised in the bottle drive will be turned over to the Buxton selectmen’s office to be distributed to those needing help.

The drive will collect bottles on two dates next month. Residents can donate bottles 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, in the parking lot at Town Hall. Bottles will also be collected 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, at four sites – the Buxton Municipal Building parking lot, Plummer’s Store parking lot, Reynolds Motorsports parking lot, and Groveville Fire Station.

Money donations will also be accepted.

The Buxton community is pulling together to give Newell a hand. The Buxton Masonic Lodge AF & AM 115 is assisting Newell with the effort along with several scouting groups.

He said the drive would benefit a lot of “elderly folks” who never ask for help. “It takes effort, but it’s not mind boggling,” Newell said about organizing the drive. “I’m tickled to death to do it.

Newell is a former teacher and principal at the Redbank School in South Portland and a school in Lyman.
