A Winslow woman is facing 17 separate counts of fraud and identity theft including four counts that occurred when the woman was working in Westbrook.
Laurie Gilliland, 36, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Portland on Monday said U.S. Attorney Paula Silsby. Gilliland was charged with one count of credit card fraud, one count of making a false statement to the U.S. Postal Service, one count of furnishing false information to the Social Security Administration, five counts of using a false social security number, five counts of making false statements in connection with a health care benefit program, and four counts of aggravated identity theft.
Westbrook Police Chief Paul McCarthy said Gilliland worked for Greater Portland Medical Group on Park Road in Westbrook last year. He said Gilliland is alleged to have stolen four credit cards from patients in four separate incidents in April, September and October of last year.
In addition to the Westbrook police, Silsby said police in Augusta, Hampden, and Winslow as well as agents from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service assisted in the investigation.
Silsby said an indictment is merely an accusation, and Gilliland is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
