Gorham Town Manager David Cole said construction, transforming the former Shaw School into a municipal center, began this week and a groundbreaking ceremony will be at 4 p.m. today, Oct. 19.

The Gorham Town Council awarded the construction bid earlier this month to Arthur Dudley of Standish. Cole said the town had received six bids on the project. Dudley submitted the low bid of $4.7 million. His base bid was $4.5 million.

Nial Construction was the high bidder with a $5.8 million bid with alternates and a base bid of $5.4 million. Other bidders included Langford in Low, T. Buck Construction, Cimino Contruction and Wright Ryan Construction.

Cole said an expected completion date would be in mid October in 2006. Cole is pleased that work began so quickly. “It’s earlier than I anticipated, which is good,” Cole said.
