A 47-year-old Gorham man died in a head-on collision on Saco Street in Gorham Wednesday morning.

Kevin Gile of New Portland Road was pronounced dead at the scene after a car driven by a 72-year-old Gorham woman struck his motorcycle near the intersection of Saco Street and Brackett Road at approximately 11:30 a.m., said Gorham Police Sgt. Daniel Young.

Gile was riding his Honda motorcycle southbound on Saco Street at the time of the crash. Young said Faye Vangilder of Newton Drive was heading northbound in her Mercury Sable station wagon at the same time, and she crossed the centerline at a bend in the road and hit Gile’s motorcycle head-on.

Police did not provide an estimate as to how fast each vehicle was traveling at the time of the accident.

The force of the accident caused both vehicles to go into a ditch at the side of the road. Young said police do not know why Vangilder’s car drifted over the centerline of the road.

Gorham Police Chief Ron Shepard said Gile was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Shepard said emergency medical crews transported Vangilder to a nearby hospital, but he did not know the extent of her injuries. There were no other people involved in the accident.

Shepard said no charges have been filed in connection with the crash. It remains under investigation by the Gorham police.
