Blue ribbon winners
Gorham was well represented in 4-H competition at the recent Cumberland Fair.
Danny Smith earned reserve champion in the market hog competition. He also finished third in the market beef class.
Competing in a variety of classes, several Gorham 4-H members won blue ribbons. They included Samantha Grant, Thomas Grant, Marie Smith and Lexi Merrifield.
Gorham Sand and Gravel bought the grand champion steer in an auction at the fair. The steer was raised by Molly Grover of Cumberland.
Bolstridge named Skillins store manager
Terry Skillin, president of Skillins Greenhouses, recently announced the addition of Sally Bolstridge of Gorham as manager at their Falmouth store.
Bolstridge is a graduate of the SMVTI (now SMCC) plant and soils department and past president of the Maine Landscape and Nursery Association.
She originally joined Skillins in 1984 as nursery manager and buyer, leaving in 1997 to work in other areas of the industry. She returns to Skillins with greater plant industry knowledge and a high level of customer service, the company said.
“Skillins’ staff and customers will benefit greatly from Sally’s knowledge and experience,” Skillin said. “We are very excited to have her as part of our team once again.”
Skillins Greenhouses is a fifth-generation family-owned business with stores in Brunswick, Falmouth and Cumberland.
Burnham honored
James W. Burnham of Gray Road recently was one of 236 Freemasons to receive the 33rd degree, the highest honor of Scottish Rite Freemasonry, in a ceremony in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The degree is awarded for outstanding service to Freemasonry or for significant contributions to humanity that reflect credit upon the fraternity.
Gorham House takes walk honors
The Gorham House, 50 New Portland Road, raised $14,218.07 in a Memory Walk, taking top honors in a recent fund-raiser for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Muller training with Navy
Alisha Muller, daughter of Kurt and Lynn Muller of Broadturn Road, Scarborough, is in basic training with the Navy at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois.
She was sworn in and left Portland for duty on Sept. 21.
Her parents held a going away and good luck celebration in her honor on Sept. 17.

Taxpayer debt
The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Wednesday, Oct. 5, that the U.S. public debt was $7,978,989,702,813.02.
Lexi Merrifield, Grade 5 at Village School, gives her hog, J.D., a bath at the recent Cumberland Fair. Merrifield took a first place in showing with Benny, another one of her two hogs that she exhibited at the fair.
