On Saturday, Oct. 15, the Standish Health and Safety Committee will host the fifth annual Health and Safety Fair at Standish Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This year the committee will be combining the fair with the Fire/EMS Department’s Open House, which concludes Fire Awareness Week. During the week before the Fair/Open House, the Department will be presenting programs to students in local schools.
The theme for this year’s fair is Health and Safety in the Home. There will be exhibits to interest people of all ages. Some of the highlights will be the Mason’s CHIP (child ID) program, lead paint information, blood pressure checks and child car seat and booster inspections. It is estimated that over 90 percent of safety seats are improperly installed. Car seats and boosters will be on sale at cost. Bicycle helmets will also be on sale for $5.
The Cumberland County Sheriffs Department will be providing seniors with TRIAD lights. These light bulbs are placed in an outdoor light, such as a porch light. This bulb will blink when the light is turned on, off and then on again. This light helps Fire, EMS and Sheriffs locate residences in an emergency. They will also be assisting the Fire Department in the program of getting all residences and mailboxes numbered. Free numbers will be available.
There will be free door prizes featuring four bicycles for ages three to 20 and baskets of gift certificates and safety items for infants, adults and seniors.
The fair will be a fun way to learn how to make your home safer and healthier.
