On Monday, Sept. 26, the Westbrook Public Services Department began the process of replacing seven Riverbank Park trees that were removed as a result of safety concerns.

The replacement trees are 2.5 to 3.5 inches in diameter and are being placed adjacent to the site of the trees that were most recently removed. Special care is being exercised with regard to the placement of the new trees near the playground area with enough distance being provided to ensure that falling branches and limbs do not pose a safety hazard to folks using the playground.

Public services arborists chose two sugar maples, two pin oaks, two ginkgo bilobas and one American elm as replacements for the trees most recently removed. Planting will be completed by the end of September.

Westbrook recently received recognition as a Tree City USA member. Tree City USA provides an economically feasible way for federal, state and local governments to work together to enhance community forestry.
