Editor’s note: State Sen. Phil Bartlett wrote the following letter to Dawn Gallagher, the commissioner of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, on Sept. 21.

I am writing to urge the Department of Environmental Protection to hold a public hearing concerning SAPPI’s application to burn construction and demolition debris at their Westbrook plant. I am sure you are well aware of the types of chemicals such burning can release into the atmosphere, and I feel strongly that area residents should be able to voice their concerns before such an activity is considered.
