The American Journal took seven awards at the Maine Press Association’s annual awards banquet Saturday at the Sunday River ski resort in Bethel.

Staff Writer Robert Lowell took first place in the weekly feature story category for his story on a couple of Gorham neighbors who took their dispute over the death of a chicken to television’s Judge Judy, and Sports Editor Rich Obrey took first place in the feature photo category for his photo of a boy jumping off the Gambo railroad bridge in Gorham.

Assistant Sports Editor Jim Correale took first place for his story on the Gorham boys basketball team’s performance in the state championship, and Editor Brendan Moran took first place for his editorial on the suspension of boys on Westbrook’s varsity basketball team from a playoff game after the school discovered some of them had attended a party where minors were consuming alcohol.

Graphic designer Jonathon Morse took second place in the supplement cover category for his design of the cover of the Westbrook Together Days supplement. The American Journal took second place in the sponsorship page category for its pages devoted to last year’s Riverwalk Arts Festival.

Editorial Cartoonist Dale Leroux took third place for his cartoon on the potential closing of St. Hyacinth’s Church in Westbrook.
