Students at Cape Elizabeth’s Pond Cove Elementary School raised $4,200 for the American Red Cross’s Hurricane Katrina relief programs as part of “wear red, bring green” day Tuesday.
Most students wore red to school that day. “Some classrooms were a sea of red,” said school secretary Barbara McLean. As for the green, some kids emptied their piggy banks and some brought checks from their parents, and McLean said the amount raised would increase since money was still being collected Wednesday.
Another “wear red, bring green” day will take place next week, but the students will be encouraged to bring items to school that would then be sent to a shelter in Louisiana.
McLean said Pond Cove’s first “wear red, bring green” day was following the tsunami in December. She didn’t recall how much was raised then.
On Friday, the Cape Elizabeth Middle School will have a “wear a hat for $1” day. Students are usually forbidden from wearing hats in the school, but that day students can wear any sort of hat they want if they pay $1, also for hurricane relief. That fund-raiser was also used for the tsunami relief effort.
