For the first time in its history, Southern Maine Community College will have an endowed chair made possible by a $40,000 donation from Gorham Savings Bank.

The contribution will allow the community college to create the Gorham Savings Bank Business Department chairman and will be used to pay a portion of the salary for a full-time faculty member. The chairman will devote specific time to the establishment of a Business Department Internship Program, which is critical to the continued development of a quality educational experience for students. This faculty member will also assist in the development of an accounting concentration in the associate in science in business administration.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide funding for the first endowed chair at SMCC,” said Chris Emmons, president of Gorham Savings Bank. “The College is growing exponentially, and we’re proud to support such an institution that is contributing to the local economy with an educated workforce,” he added as he presented a check to President Jim Ortiz.

“This contribution will help both our institutions enhance the educational and economic opportunities of the region,” said Ortiz. “Partnerships like this are vital to the college and we look forward to a time when every department of the college has an endowed chair,” he said.
