The Scarborough boys jumped to a quick start this soccer season with a 1-0 victory over Kennebunk. But the Storm stumbled in game two, dropping a 2-1 decision to a hungry Gorham team Tuesday night in Gorham.

“We lost to a good team tonight, but we were flat,” said Coach Mark Diaz. “No question about that.”

The teams were deadlocked through most of the first half, Scarborough goalie Derek Poulin making some nice saves, continuing his fine play from the Kennebunk shutout Friday.

But Gorham drew first blood with 5:27 left in the first half, Philip Reed drilling an unassisted shot from 15 yards out that glanced off the left post and in.

Scarborough answered before the break, however. Brent Mayo directed a header to Taylor Sabo, who knocked it into the net with 1:36 left in the half, knotting the game at 1-1.

Not quite midway through the second half, Gorham got the game-winner, Patrick King sailing a 30-yard free kick just under the cross bar.

It was the first win of the season for Gorham after falling to Deering 3-0 to start its first fall in Class A.

Scarborough had tied Deering in an exhibition match and played well at Kennebunk. Dana Bennett scored the only goal in that win, assisted by Chris Tyson.

“But,” said Diaz, “our energy wasn’t that good tonight. We’re not happy with that. We need to work on some things offensively. But we’re hoping by midseason we’ll be where we want to be.”

Gorham Coach Tim King said his team was poised for its first win.

“We were really disappointed in the way we played against Deering,” King said. “We felt like we didn’t give ourselves a chance. There was no intensity.

“But we came out a different team tonight,” he said. “Truth be told, we just came to play. We beat them to the ball and I think we were the better team tonight.”

Still, he had nothing but admiration for Scarborough’s program.

“They are solid,” King said of the Red Storm. “They are deep and fast and just don’t make mistakes. Anytime you can beat Scarborough, that’s a feather in your cap.”
